- A Samurai sword consists of the Katana (long sword) Wakizashi (short sword), known as “Daisho,” and Tanto (dagger) blade made by covering a soft iron core with layers of steel, and a hilt often made from wood covered with fish skin and bound with flat braid. The blade was protected by a scabbard (saya) of lacquered wood.
Samurai would use their katana sword in combat against other samurai, and they were highly trained in their implementation. It was a very important thing for the samurai to be a master with his weapon or he would be an ineffective warrior. They spent several hours every day practicing with their weapon so that they would fight well in battle.
The Samurai often gave names to their swords and believed it was the “soul” of their warrior-ship. The oldest swords were straight and had their early design in Korea and China. The Samurai’s desire for tougher, sharper swords for battle gave rise to the curved blade we still have today. Today it is still the custom in Japan to make a gift of a Samurai sword on special occasions, as a reminder and respect for the past.
This 3 piece set is made of stainless steel. It features a black scabbard with the Hattori Hanso figure etched on the black lacquered scabbard with a black and gold design on both ends. The stand is made of hardwood and will hold all three swords of this set.
