Inuyasha, the main star of the anime is half demon, half human. He possesses a human heart but strong demon like claws and strength. 50 years ago, he tried to obtain the Shikon stone, which can turn him into a full demon, but was stopped by the maiden who protects the stone: Kikyo.

Tessaiga (⟳ZÑÀ) is a fictional sword in the anime and manga series Inuyasha, wielded by half-human, half-y¨­kai (hany¨­) InuYasha. The kanji, directly translated, means "iron-crushing fang".

The Tessaiga was made from a fang of Inuyasha's and Sesshomaru's full-blooded demon father. In its 'docile' form, the sword looks like an ordinary (and rather battered) katana. The sword is enchanted so that no one, human or demon, may wield it unless they have a desire to protect humans. In its active state, it transforms into a weapon roughly the size of a car bumper that somewhat resembles a falchion, and has the power to slay 100 demons in one swing by striking the Wind Scar. In this form the handguard changes into fur and the rest of blade resembles a very sharp fang. This fur is supposed to be white, similar to Sesshomaru's mokomoko sama, since it comes from their father who had silverish white fur.

Inu no Taishou was an extraordinarily powerful demon that carried three swords of immense power. Before dying, he entrusted two of these swords to his sons. Inuyasha received Tessaiga, a weapon with the power to protect man, and Sesshoumaru received Tenseiga, a blade capable of saving a hundred lives with a single swing. However, the third sword, Sou’unga, was an incredibly evil weapon capable of opening the gates of Hell. In order to protect the world from its wicked powers, it was sealed away. Now, two hundred years later, Sou’unga has returned and fallen into the wrong hands. Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru set off to destroy their father's third sword.
